“The setting sun wraps the landscape in a shawl of burning bright light. I feel the spray of the breaking waves against my face, while I sit on the shore watching and listening”

“There was an altar in each of the dungeons – men’s, women’s, holding cell before the final embarkation and the cell for delivering infants born in captivity. We left a dish of grated yam and palm oil with hard boiled egg, candles, flowers, and sweets. We went from one to the other making offerings and remembering the sacrifices of our dear, beloved ancestors. We sang, chanted, prayed, cried, wailed, spewed libation, and exorcised the nightmare. It was a dear price to pay to allow the cosmic pendulum to swing back this far. Every step I take towards myself - time, fear, anger, and obstacles all fall away. “

“After baking in our clay suits, we rinsed ourselves in the ocean and sat in the algae pool – this is a crevice that holds water from breaking waves which heats up when the tide goes out. UNREAL!! Having the clay on my body and in my hair, reminds me of those images by Leni Riefenshtal of the Masai people who adorn themselves with red ochre and elaborate beadwork.”

“The moon was full the whole weekend and shone very brightly through the east facing window of the cottage. The sound of the Atlantic Ocean pounding against the rocky shore is just the sound of heaven rocking you to sleep. The breeze from the ocean trade winds sweeps through the room, making the curtains and mosquito net flutter. As I close my eyes, I’m thinking that heaven must be like this.”
